Protecting cardholders around the clock.

eGuard is a program that replaces current static password solutions for MasterCard Secure Code and Verified by VISA transactions with a Risk Based Authentication model. This tool provides a better cardholder experience and only challenges or declines cardholders if the model detects suspected fraud.

When you use eGuard, you have an added layer of defense to help mitigate the growing card-not-present fraud threat.

How does it work?

If an online merchant requires a transaction to be processed through 3D Secure, and the Omni Shield Fraud Prevention system suspects the transaction is fraudulent, the customer will be asked to authenticate the transaction. The customer will receive a one-time password via SMS text. The customer will enter that one-time password into the space indicated on the merchant’s site and the transaction will continue.

If the transaction is fraudulent, the fraudster will not receive the text and the transaction will be denied. Our customer can feel assured that should they receive a text with a one-time password and they are not expecting it, they may have prevented fraud on their card.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: What is eGuard?

A: eGuard is a risk based 3D Secure solution that provides an extra layer of security for eCommerce transactions. eGuard supports MasterCard SecureCode, Verified by Visa, and ProtectBuy by Discover.

Q: Will cardholders still have to enroll on Visa or MasterCard’s website?

A: No. With eGuard, cardholders will automatically be enrolled in the new service.

Q: Will cardholders have to enter a one-time password for all eGuard transactions?

A: No. Because eGuard utilizes a sophisticated risk based fraud model, the vast majority of your cardholders’ eCommerce transactions that are processed as a 3D Secure transaction by the merchant will go through with no interruption. Cardholders will only be declined or asked to authenticate when the activity is suspicious.
